K-Gold Temporary Gallery presents the exhibition “Go straight until you find the sea” curated by Suzanna Petot with the participation of six female-identifying artists whose practice combines photography, moving image, performance, and poetry.
The exhibition proposes contemporary alternative narratives around the legacy of Sappho, the lyric poetess from the Greek island of Lesvos. Although only a few fragments of her work survive, her contribution to the Western tradition is extraordinary, especially in reference to notions of love, beauty, mystery, and myth. The invited artists each speak to these themes, highlighting how intimacy, nature, and magic can be seen in the everyday and what these moments reveal about identity, whether personal or collective.
Part of the show is the second issue of “The Wild Ones” journal which showcases experiments in contemporary photography through a series of conversations with the participating artists. Their visual research focuses on new meeting points, where the word ‘wild’ draws connotations of being uncontrollable, spontaneous, dangerous, feared, fierce, determined, and free.
Finally, K-Gold Temporary Gallery collaborates with Mediterranea 19 Young Artists Biennale, connecting Lesvos island with the Republic of San Marino, as part of the latter’s public program in major cultural centres across Europe. During the opening (22/05/21), selected films by Alcaeus Spyrou and the Latent Community (Sotiris Tsiganos & Ionian Bisai) will be screened, introduced by Nicolas Vamvouklis. The event will be also streamed on the “School of Waters” YouTube channel.
The exhibition project, as a whole, is an invitation to rediscover the fluidity that has transformed the Mediterranean into a platform of coexistence of diverse lifeforms and processes of knowledge.
